What is Roleplay? Episode Seven

Role-playing is not optional on a RP-PVP server.

Like many I was caught up in this weekends post-patch fervour to grind Emblems of Conquest. We ran a massive slew of Heroics to that purpose. After which I put on my favourite robe and waited in Elwynn Forest for the chance to kick someone’s ass.

While I was sitting on the fence, like Elves do for reasons known only to us, another 80th level character came strolling along, bristling with armour and weapons.

One of the aspiring heroes ran up and told him; ‘Good evening!’

To which he replied; ‘Fag’. And then rode off.

A few minutes later this same arrogant person put out a message on the general channel:

‘Anyone want any help with Hogger while I am here?’

I couldn’t resist replying; ‘You and what army?’

This bought some sniggers on the general channel and the angry reply:

‘F****king roleplayers! I won’t be laughed at by some kid who thinks he is his character!’

I might usefully add that the speaker was from a guild once considered the elite of our server. But in those days elite also meant friendly and helpful.

If you’ve been following this blog, you will have noticed a broad and encouraging attitude to defining role-play. Thus far I have:

Looked at role-play in terms of developing character.

Encouraged people not to break character for the purposes of arguing about role-play in game.

Invited everyone to consider themselves as role-players. You don't have to sit in the tavern chewing over the old days. But you should try to stay in character.

You may or may not agree with my definitions. However, role-playing is not optional on a RP or RP-PVP Server.

Some confusion exists about the definition of RP-PVP. I will make it very, very simple to understand. A RP-PVP server is a RP server. With PVP active.

Anyone who disagrees and thinks it is either/or can try two experiments to check:

Read Blizzards own definition. It is very clear.

Go and stand outside an enemy city.

It will soon become clear that neither RP nor PVP are optional.

  1. "Go and stand outside an enemy city."

Somehow that arrogant I imagine look Ard gives the Horde is actually there! I can't go near any of the without being attacked.

  2. Why do people join RP servers if they hate RP?
probably because they know that they have more chance to be 'leet' when half the population (ok, 2%) are running around pretending to be Arthas' brother or the love-child of Thrall.

You don't have to RP on an RP server, but anyone on one should be tolerant of those that are. Insulting people for it shows immaturity.

I might add that Blizzard are also responsible for creating way too many RP servers in the first place, and also for making them exactly the same as any other server.

  3. I disagree. How could Blizz have made 'too many' RP servers? If there is demand for a world where you stay in character but whilst also at the same time not want to live in fear of being suddenly 'ganked', then there will always be as many, if not more, RP servers as there is currently.

Our server 'The Venture Co.', being an Rp-PvP Realm, is quite simply a world (stated by blizz) that allows players from opposing factions to war with each other but which also implies that you stay in character.

Now, if someone has rolled on a Rp-PvP for the reason of wanting to be 'leet PvP-wise' when compared to the more casual PvPers then they will be sadly shown a very different picture. Our server, boasts very competitive PvP BGs and World PvP where your character actually starts to 'fear' certain areas in the world which is directly related to the amount of hostility met by their oposing factions. Two areas of note are Icecrown and Storm Peaks, only the bravest adventure he in search of fame and fortune due to amount of resistance met from the opposing faction =)

This all adds up to be a flavorsome experience of a game already enriched with detail both plot-wise and scenery-wise.

Playing a character (in character) and not is the difference between reading a book and watching a film... both are enjoyable but one (arguably) gives a whole lot more vivid look into the wold being portrayed.

Anyway, thanks Fey. Nice summary there of the previous blog episodes. I'm very sad to hear that you are still meeting people in game that are actively trying to sunder the 4th wall!

Heres hoping that Fey and Eyriours next training session in Crystalsong will be interrupted by 2 or more Orcs that are more than willing to show off their prowess in comabat... happy hunting Fey!
